Travel Guide to Jaisalmer: Best Things to do in Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is a beautiful destination for people looking for a desert adventure. This is the only travel guide you will need to plan your Jaisalmer trip.

Like a mysterious oasis in the midst of Thar desert, Jaisalmer is one of the most historical cities in India. Named after Maharaja Jaisal Singh, the city was once meant for the royals of Rajasthan. With its majestic forts and palaces, hilly sand dunes, freshwater lake, and open-air markets, it evokes a mystical charm, the kind that we have read in Arabian nights books. Jaisalmer exhibits rich culture, traditions, and a history that goes back to hundreds of years. Visit this ancient city that not only sparks your imagination but also offers exciting safaris and adventures.

Winter is the best time to visit Jaisalmer from November and March with pleasant weather which is perfect to enjoy a desert safari. If you’re thinking of going to this desert city, here are the best things to do in Jaisalmer during you stay.

Explore the Majestic Jaisalmer Fort

A main attraction of the city, Jaisalmer Fort draws travellers across the country and the world with its temples, ancient step wells, and intricate stone carvings. It is also known as Sonar Qila (Golden Fort) and seems like its rising from the desert becoming one with the golden hues of sand. The setting of the sun at different points of time during the day reflects differently on the fort and adds mystique to it. Get lost in the fort’s narrow twisting alleys and crooked staircase that sometimes leads to the outer wall to offer a view of the vast desert. There are also a number of roof top cafes close to the fort where you could go for a drink and enjoy the view.

Enjoy an Evening Boat Ride on Gadisar Lake

A 14th century manmade lake, Gadisar was built by Maharawal Gadsi Singh in 1367 to fulfill the needs of the population. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction in Jaisalmer where you can enjoy boat rides by renting the paddle boats. The lake is lined with numerous temples and pavilions, some of which are even on the water. The spot is especially popular with photographers because of the spectacular surroundings and backdrops, particularly during sunset.

Visit the Intricately Carved Jain Temples

The Jain Temples are located inside the Jaisalmer Fort and date back to the 12th and 15th centuries. Like most of the structures in the city, these temples are also made of yellow sandstone in the style of Dilwara architecture. The temples are dedicated to the famous Jain hermits, Rikhabdevji and Shambhavdevji, also known as 'Tirthankars' which means teachers who teach people how to achieve nirvana. The temples have a relatively minimalistic exterior, though are worthy of a visit because of its floor to ceiling intricate stone carvings. They are open for visitors only from 8am to noon so plan your visit accordingly.

Admire the Stunning Havelis

Jaisalmer is filled with numerous old mansions designed intricately with carved brackets and jharokhas. Most of these havelis have lost parts but you can still admire paintings and mirror work. Here are some of the famous havelis that you must visit during your stay.

Nathmal ji ki Haveli: This haveli was built by two architect brothers in the 19th century and worked from the two sides of the haveli, resulting in a beautiful amalgam of design and symmetry. Miniature style paintings and carvings out of yellow sandstone are used for decoration. The haveli was the residence of the then Prime Minister of Jaisalmer, Diwan Mohata Nathmal.

Salim Singh ki Haveli: Also known as the Peacock Haveli, it was built in the first half of the 18th century on top of an even older haveli. A part of the mansion is still occupied by descendants of the original residents. The haveli has a high arched roof supported by peacock designed brackets.

Patwon ki Haveli: This is the most popular and the largest haveli in Jaisalmer, also the most elaborately carved. It has lost some of its early grandeur but you can still admire a few paintings and mirror work on the interior walls.

Experience Sand Dune Bashing & Camel Rides at the Thar Desert

Exploring the golden dunes via a sport utility vehicle is one of the most thrilling activities that you can indulge in. If you’re the adventurous type, this is a perfect activity for you to rush your adrenaline but must be done under strict supervision as it includes sharp overturns and speeding.

If you find sand dunes bashing too extreme, you can go for camel trekking in the Thar desert which is another popular activity in Jaisalmer. There are two options, the sunset tour that includes driving to the desert for a camel safari, dinner and star-gazing before returning back to the city. The second option includes spending a night outdoors in a luxurious desert camp that makes you feel like you’re glamping like the Maharajas of Rajasthan.

Discover the Abandoned Village of Kuldhara

Located about 18 km from Jaisalmer is the abandoned village of Kuldhara with an interesting history that has piqued the curiosity of many. According to folklore, the village was abandoned overnight after an unscrupulous minister asked to marry the village chief’s daughter. It remains a mystery how an entire village vanished within a night. Nobody saw them leave, and no one knows where they went.
