From lush tea estates to peaceful beaches, monsoon brings out a softer, richer side of Sri Lanka that many travellers miss. Here’s why this season might be the best time to explore the island’s southwest — and the stunning destinations that await.

1. The Enchanting Hill Country of Ella

Located in the Badulla District, Ella is a beautiful village surrounded by emerald tea plantations and foggy hills; during the monsoon, the scene explodes to dramatic life. While mist hangs over the valleys for an air of mystery, light showers all day paint the slopes in more brilliant greens. Beginning your days with a trip up Little Adam's Peak provides stunning sights over a foggy jungle canopy. Watch a train journey over the famous Nine Arches Bridge; a spectacular picture as the rain reveals the moss-covered boulders and the bordering woodlands. And don't forget Ravana Falls, which thunder into strong cataracts during the wet season.

2. Galle Fort in the Rain

There are a few cities matching the historical value and coastal attraction as Galle Fort does.
