One of the least-visited places but definitely the prettiest, Lakshadweep islands are hidden gems of India that deserve more attention than they receive. Located in the Arabian Sea off the western coast of India, this archipelago comprises of 36 islands out of which only 10 are inhabited. These islands are known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life. It offers the kind of dream beach holiday that travellers spend a fortune abroad within India. The ideal time to visit Lakshadweep is between October and mid-May when the weather is dry and pleasant with moderate temperatures and low humidity. During this period, you’ll find the sea calm making it perfect for water activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Lakshadweep islands experience monsoon from May to September that are characterised by heavy rainfall and rough seas along with occasional storms and cyclones so it’s better to avoid travel during this time.

There are two ways to travel to Lakshadweep either by taking a flight or a ship from Kochi. The airport on Agatti Island is well connected to Kochi with several airlines including Air India and IndiGo operating flights between these destinations. If you’re planning to take a ship, Lakshadweep Administration operates ships between Kochi and the islands of Kavaratti, Kadmat, and Minicoy.
Make sure to book flights or ship tickets in advance, especially during the peak season, to avoid any last-minute hassle.
Since entry to Lakshadweep is restricted, you will need an entry permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration for which you’ll first need a clearance certificate (available online) from your local police station. Attach identification documents and three passport-sized photos to this clearance certificate, you can download the entry permit or get it from the Lakshadweep Administrative Office at Willingdon Island in Kochi.
