KERALA BACKWATERS

The backwaters of this southernmost state of India, Kerala, are an amazing revelation to the tired soul. It is a network of lakes, estuaries and deltas of 44 rivers draining into the Arabian Sea. A staggering 900 Kms navigable stretch of this water body connects the villages of Kerala and is still used as a mode of local transport. The largest backwater stretch in Kerela is the Vembanad Lake which flows through three districts and opens out into the sea at the Kochi Port. The Astamudi lake, which covers a major portion of Kollam district in the south is considered to be the gateway to the backwaters.

An amazing spectacle one gets to see in these backwaters are the traditional Houseboats of Kerala called the ‘Kettuvallams'. Navigating the waters in these boats is an experience nonpareil. Needless to say it is one of the most popular tourist attraction of Kerala.

KERALA BEACHES

Kerala has a 600 Km long shorelines encompassing some of the most beautiful and charming beaches, coconut groves, lagoons and sheltered coves, all maintained in its pristine state .

Kovalam beach

Kovalam consists of three adjacent beaches. The southernmost, known as the Lighthouse beach, is the most popular one. Kovalam also offers accommodation options to suit all the budgets and taste.

Poovar Beach

An unspoilt and unexplored island, enveloped by the most serene backwaters, opening out to the sea and a majestic golden sand beach

Shanghumugham Beach

This is a favorite haunt of the sunset viewers. This beach is adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram ( Trivandrum ) airport and the Veli Tourist Village

The Varkala Beach

Vakala doubles as a seaside resort and an important Hindu pilgrim centre. High cliffs with rich mineral springs rise majestically from the coastline. The 2000 year old Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple and the Nature Care Centre are the two main attractions there.

Alappuzha Beach

This is one of the most popular picnic spots in Alappuzha.

Cherai Beach

This lovely beach bordering Vypin island is ideal for swimming. The occasional sight of the dolphins swimming in the crystal clear waters will leave you mesmerized.

Fort Kochi Beach

This historical beach is situated in Fort Kochi, the town shaped by the Portuguese, the Dutch and later the British.

Kappad

This is the historic beach where Vasco da Gama landed on the 27th of May, 1498 with 170 men in three vessels. An interesting feature of this rock-studded beach is the sprawling rock that protrudes into the sea. The temple situated on the rock is believed to be 800 years old.













KERALA HILL STATIONS

Ever been amidst nature in its virgin beauty? Kerala is home to a chain of lush green landscapes, where you can do nothing but sink in relaxation.

Munnar Hills

Munnar hills is situated in the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni & Kundala. Situated 1600 metre above sealevel, this hill station was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Government in South India. Sprawling tea plantations, picture-postcard towns, winding lanes and holiday facilities make this a popular resort town.

Ramakalmedu

Rolling green hills and the fresh mountain air make Ramakalmedu an enchanting retreat. The hilltop also offers a panoramic view of the picturesque villages of Bodi and Cumbum on the eastern slope of the Western Ghats. It is situated at a distance of 40 km from Thekkady and 75 km from Munnar

Devikulam

Situated 16kms south-west of Munnar, is a small hill station Devikulam, which means 'Pond of the Goddess'. It is believed that Sita, reincarnation of a goddess, once had a bath in the pond near by and hence the name ‘Devikulam’.

Rajamala

Rajamala is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr (Mountain Goat). The Eravikulam - Rajamala region is now home to half the world population of this rare breed– estimated at around 1300 worldwide. As it is, the Tahr is only one of the reasons to make a visit to Rajamala.

Vagamon

Arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world, with a chain of three hills - the Thangal hill, the Murugan hill and the Kurisumala – it is important as a religious spot for Muslims, Hindus and Christians alike

Pullumedu

Velvet lawns and rare flora and fauna add to the beauty of Pullumedu. The famous Sree Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala and the ‘Makara Jyothi’ illuminations at the shrine are visible from here. The winding journey to this hill along the Periyar River, offers a breath-taking view of hills draped in the lush greenery.

Vandanmedu

This is one of the world's largest auction centres for cardamom. A walk through the sprawling cardamom plantations of Vandanmedu is a truly exhilarating experience.

Vandiperiyar

The River Periyar flowing through the centre of this town nourishes its vast tea, coffee and pepper plantations. A major trade centre, Vandiperiyar is also home to a number of tea factories. The Agriculture Farm and Flower Garden have a delightful array of rose plants and orchids.

Pattumala

Pattumala in Peermede has charms like no other place in the world. The lofty peaks, the little streams and the green expanse of the tea plantations give the hills an unearthly beauty.

KERALA CLIMATE

The diversity of the geographical features of the state has resulted in a corresponding diversity in climate. The High Ranges have a cool and bracing climate throughout the year, while the plains are hot and humid.

The average level of annual rainfall is quite high when compared to other Indian states, almost three times higher than in Karnataka while twice than in Tamilnadu. The state basically enjoys 4 types of climate such as Winter, Summer, South West Monsoon and North East Monsoon.

A Historian’s delight, Kerala possesses a rich colonial history centering on the British, Portuguese and Dutch empire’s proliferation. More so is the rich Maritime History, as the golden sands of the Kerala coast would tell you, if they could talk.
