Dinner and overnight stay will be at the houseboat in Srinagar.

The Mughal Gardens as the name suggests was built in the Mughal period and is located around 13 km from Srinagar. These gardens are a great display of Mughal style architecture and design forming part of the well renowned gardens namely Chasma Shahi (the royal fountains), Pari Mahal (the palace of the fairies), Nishat Bagh (the garden of spring) and Shalimar Bagh. With beautifully manicured gardens, colourful flowers, terraced lawns and cascading fountains this marvel is a travellers delight.

Nishat Bagh is the second largest Mughal garden in the Kashmir Valley located on the eastern side of the Dal Lake with the Zabarwan Mountains providing a picturesque backdrop. This marvellous garden was built in 1633 with great beauty and grandeur by Asif Khan, Nur Jahan’s brother. Nishat Bagh is laid out in a broad cascade of terraces lined with avenues of chinar and cypress trees which starts from the lakeshore and reaches upto an artificial façade at the hill end. Rising from the edge of the Dal Lake, it has 12 terraces representing the twelve Zodiac signs. Also referred to as the “Garden of Joy”, complete with fountains and beautifully landscaped gardens with vibrant flowerbeds, Nishat Bagh commands an amazing view of the Dal Lake beneath the snow-capped Pir Panjal mountain range.

Shalimar Bagh is located on the northeast side of Dal Lake, approximately fifteen kilometres away from the city of Srinagar. The royal garden of Kashmir is rectangular in shape and covers an area about 12.4 hectares. According to legend, the Shalimar Gardens (‘Abode of Love’) was originally a villa built by Pravarsena II. The king stayed here on his visit to Saint Sukarma Swami living near Harwan. In 1619 Emperor Jehangir laid out a garden on this spot calling it Ferrah Bakkash (‘the delightful’‘) for his beloved wife Nurjahan. In 1630, under the orders of Shah Jahan, the local Kashmiri governor, Zafar Khan, extended the garden under the name of Faiz Baksh (‘the bountiful’).The garden is laid down in four terraces ,rising one above the other. A canal runs through the garden lined with polished stones and supplies with water from Harwan.

The Hazratbal Shrine Mosque complex is situated on the western shore of the Dal Lake, facing the beautiful Nishat Bagh and commands a spectacular view of the lake and mountain beyond. This revered shrine houses the Moi-e-Muqqadus (preserved sacred hair) of the prophet Muhammad which is displayed to the public on religious occasions. Hazratbal is a beautiful structure of immaculate white marble and the only domed mosque in Srinagar; the others having distinct pagoda like roofs. Friday prayers are offered at Hazratbal and attended by throngs of people.

Shankarcharya Temple known to be built by Jaluka, the son of Emperor Ashoka around 200 BC, is an ancient shrine located on the Shankaracharya Hill (Takht-e- Suleiman) in Srinagar. This sacred site, situated at a height of about 1100 feet on the south-east of the city, offers splendid views of the valley and the snow clad mountains of the Pir Panjal range. Myth has it that saint Shankaracharya spent some of his time at this site during his visit to Kashmir to revitalize Sanatan Dharma. He worshipped the Shiva Lingam, which is still found in the Sanctum Sanctorum. Shankaracharya Temple, constructed on an elevated octagonal plane, can be reached through a flight of steps bounded by side-walls. The inner sanctum adorns a modern ceiling & several Persian inscriptions.
