The Golden Temple or Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji is the most important Sikh shrine and a living symbol of the spiritual and historical traditions of the Sikhs. Originally the Golden Temple also known as the Darbar Sahib was a small lake in a dense forest, subsequently developed by Sikh Guru’s and soon the city of Amritsar grew. A unique place of worship, the Golden Temple welcomes people from all walks of life irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Captivating both devotees and tourists alike, the Golden Temple stands as a timeless place of worship where one can listen to the enchanting hyms. Guru Ka Langar is served to approximately 40,000 people daily from all faiths and nationalities.

Jallianwala Bagh is the place where, on April 13th 1919, British and Gurkha soldiers on the orders by a military officer Brigadier General Dyer, opened fire on an unarmed forbidden gathering, killing hundreds of civilians including men , women and children. The Jallianwala Bagh Martyr's Memorial, Amritsar was built in the memory of those who lost their lives in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. The incident took place on the birth anniversary of the Khalsa, which is considered to be a holy day by the Sikhs. A place of national pilgrimage, the memorial is located in the vicinity of the Golden Temple complex, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs.

Dalhousie is a hill station in Himachal Pradesh which was established in 1854 by the British Empire as a summer retreat and the town was named after Lord Dalhousie, who was the British Viceroy in India at that time. It is built on around five hills located 2,700 metres above sea level, on the western edge of the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas. Scottish and Victorian architecture is prevalent in the bungalows and churches in the town. Dalhousie is a gateway to the ancient Chamba Hill State which is the origin of Hindu culture, art, temples and handicrafts preserved since the mid-6th century.

Day 03: Dalhousie – Khajjiar - Chamba

After an early breakfast at the hotel in Dalhousie, visit Khajjiar, where you can enjoy horse riding (Optional) and the beautiful scenery. Then leave for Chamba and visit the Laxmi Narayan Temple. The rest of the day is free for you to spend at leisure. Evening drive back to Dalhousie. Overnight at hotel.

Khajjiar is located about 24 km from Dalhousie and is a hill station in the Chamba district surrounded by lush green meadows and dense forests. It is often called the ‘ Mini Switzerland’ of Himachal Pradesh and has a combination of three eco-systems lake, pastures and forests ,all in one place.

Chamba is small town known for its exquisite natural beauty and picturesque landscapes surrounded by the Sub-Himalayan range of mountains full of diverse flora and fauna, verdant valleys and lakes. Chamba is situated at an altitude of 926 metres and is spread over an area of 24 km. Chamba is well known for its arts , handicrafts and textiles ,particularly its Pahari paintings dating back to the 17th and 19th Century. Chamba is also famous for its temples built of richly engraved stone carved walls and sculptures. The town was said to be named after Champavati, the King’s daughter which over the years was simply shortened to ‘Chamba’.

The Laxmi Narayan Temple was built by Raja Sahil Varman in the 10th Century and is regarded as the oldest as well as the largest temple in Chamba which attracts a large number of visitors. The six temples in the Laxmi Narayan Temple complex are dedicated to either Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu. There are some other shrines housed together in the complex which include the temple of Radha Krishna, Shiva Temple of Chandergupta and Gauri Shankar Temple.

The architecture of the Laxmi Narayan Temple is in the Shikhara style which has a Bimana (shikhara), Garbhagriha and also a Mandapa like structure which has been built with wooden chatries to suit the local climatic conditions. The temple continued to be decorated by various kings of Chamba at different times. King Balabhadra Verma added a metallic image of Garuda, the vahana (Lord Vishnu’s mount) on a high pillar at the main gate of the temple, while Raja Chhatra Singh adorned the temple roof with gold plated pinnacle, as a protest against the orders of Aurangzeb to demolish the temple.

Legend states that Raja Sahil Verma who constructed this temple, sent nine of his sons to the Vindhyas mountains to get marble which was suitable for the construction of the Vishnu idol. The marble brought back contained a frog and was considered inauspicious .The sons were sent off again but got killed while on their way back. But the king did not give up and sent his eldest son to fetch the marble. He was attacked by the robbers, but with the help of a saint he managed to both save himself and kill his attackers. Yugkara, the eldest prince returned successfully with the required slab which was used to make the image of Lord Vishnu in the temple.
